Silver Coins for Diwali Gifting: What Companies Get Wrong About Purity, Weight and Cost
The most requested corporate Diwali gift in India, and the three things buyers consistently misjudge.
Ask any Indian gifting company what their phone rings about in September and October, and silver coins will be near the top of the list.
The reason is simple and slightly unromantic: a silver coin needs no explanation. Nobody has to guess what it cost or whether it was thoughtful. In a country where buying silver on Dhanteras is an actual ritual, a silver coin given by an employer slots neatly into something people were going to do anyway.
But it is also the gift where buyers most often misjudge the economics. Here are the three places that happens.
One: purity is not a detail, it is most of the price
Silver gets sold in a few standard purities and the gap between them is real money.
999 fine silver is as close to pure as commercial silver goes. It is soft, it tarnishes, and it is what most gifting coins are made from because the buyer is buying metal value, not durability.
925 sterling has 7.5 percent copper added for hardness. It is what jewellery and cutlery are made from. It costs slightly less per gram and holds detail better under engraving.
Silver-plated is not silver. It is brass or German silver with a microns-thin silver layer. It looks identical in a photograph and costs a fraction. There is nothing wrong with gifting it — plenty of excellent gifts are plated — but the recipient will know the difference the moment they hold it, and you should know what you are buying.
If a quote looks dramatically cheaper than another for the same stated weight, purity is almost always where the difference lives.
Two: weight decides the budget, not the design
A five-gram coin and a ten-gram coin cost roughly double, because you are mostly buying metal. The design, the box, the engraving — those are a small fraction of the total on a genuine silver coin.
This is the opposite of how most gifting works. On a hamper, presentation is a large share of cost. On a silver coin, presentation is a rounding error and the metal is everything.
What this means practically: do not try to save money by simplifying the design. Save it by choosing the right weight. A beautifully presented five-gram coin reads far better than a ten-gram coin in a weak box, and costs less.
Three: silver price moves, and your quote has a shelf life
Silver is a traded commodity. The rate on the day you ask is not the rate three weeks later, and in a volatile stretch the move can be meaningful on a five-hundred-piece order.
Any honest vendor will tell you a silver quote holds for a limited window. If someone offers you a silver coin rate valid for a month without caveat, ask what purity they are planning to deliver.
Lock quantity and purity early. That is the only real protection.
What branding actually does to a coin
Most corporate silver coins carry the company logo on one face and a festive motif — Lakshmi, Ganesh, a diya — on the other. The logo can be struck into the die or laser-engraved afterwards.
Die-struck is cleaner and better for large volumes, because the cost of the die is spread across the order. For a small quantity it is usually not worth it, and laser engraving on a blank coin is the sensible route.
One practical note from production: fine logos with thin lines do not survive well on soft 999 silver at small diameters. If your logo has delicate elements, either go up a size or simplify the mark for the coin. It is better to find this out at artwork stage than to see five hundred coins with a smudged logo.
Where silver coins work best
They work best as the top tier of a mixed programme, not as the whole programme.
A common structure we see work: a hamper for the wider team, and a silver coin added for managers, long-service employees, or channel partners. The coin becomes a recognition, not just a distribution.
They also travel well, store well, and do not spoil — which matters when you are shipping to forty locations and some parcels will sit at a reception desk for a week.
The thing nobody mentions
Silver tarnishes. It is a chemical certainty, not a defect, and it happens faster in humid coastal cities than in dry inland ones.
A coin sealed in a capsule or pouch stays bright for years. The same coin loose in a drawer in Mumbai will dull within months. Spend the small amount on proper packaging — it is the difference between a gift that stays a keepsake and one that looks neglected by March.
